Eleventh graders, or juniors, are usually 16 years old at the start of the year and turn 17 during it. So most 11th graders are 16 or 17.
Under a September 1 cutoff, 11th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2009, and September 1, 2010. Junior year is the heaviest college-prep year: the October PSAT counts for National Merit, most students take the SAT or ACT in spring, and colleges weigh junior grades heavily. It's also the most common year to start dual enrollment or AP courses.
The calculator above shows exact 11th grade birthdates for your state: choose a state and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Homeschool families in most states choose their child's grade themselves and can work at different levels by subject; if your state requires testing or evaluations at certain grades, factor that in.
Tips for using it
- Homeschoolers register for the PSAT through a local school; contact one in early fall.
- Draft course descriptions this year so senior-year applications go smoothly.

Questions
Can a 17-year-old be a junior?
Yes. Many juniors turn 17 during the year, and a student with a birthday just after the cutoff may be 17 for most of 11th grade.
Why is junior year important?
It's the last full year of grades colleges see before applications, and it's when most students take the PSAT, SAT or ACT. Strong junior-year courses show readiness for college work.
