An 11-year-old is usually in 6th grade, or in 5th grade if they turned 11 after the fall cutoff.
In states with a September 1 cutoff, 6th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2014, and September 1, 2015, and 5th graders between September 2, 2015, and September 1, 2016. Sixth grade is the first year of middle school in many districts. Math shifts to ratios, rates and early algebra, and students are expected to manage more work on their own. For homeschoolers, this is often when families add outside classes or a more independent curriculum.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- Middle school math builds fast, so check that multiplication facts and fractions are automatic before pre-algebra.
- Eleven is a good age to hand over a planner and let your child manage part of their own schedule.

Questions
Is an 11-year-old in 5th or 6th grade?
Either. It depends on the birthday and the state cutoff: a child who turned 11 by the cutoff is usually in 6th grade, and one who turns 11 later is usually in 5th.
Is 6th grade middle school?
In many districts, yes; middle school often covers grades 6–8. Others use a K–5 or K–6 elementary school and grades 7–8 junior high, so it varies by district.
