A 12-year-old is usually in 7th grade, or in 6th grade if they turned 12 after the fall cutoff.

With a September 1 cutoff, 7th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2013, and September 1, 2014, and 6th graders between September 2, 2014, and September 1, 2015. Seventh grade is the middle of middle school. Pre-algebra is typical, with some students starting Algebra I a year early, and science and history classes start asking for lab reports and longer research papers. Homeschool families who plan to count high school credits often start thinking about the math sequence now.

Either is normal. A child who turned 12 by the state cutoff is usually in 7th grade; one who turns 12 later in the school year is usually in 6th.

What math should a 12-year-old be doing?

Usually 7th grade math or pre-algebra: ratios and proportions, negative numbers, simple equations and basic geometry. Some students are ready for Algebra I, which is fine if the foundations are strong.
