Tenth graders, or sophomores, are usually 15 years old at the start of the year and turn 16 during it. So most 10th graders are 15 or 16.
With a September 1 cutoff, 10th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2010, and September 1, 2011. Sophomore year often means Geometry or Algebra II, chemistry or biology, world history, and a second year of a foreign language. Many students take the PSAT for practice, and it's a good year to learn your state's dual-enrollment rules and to explore driver's education, since many states allow a learner's permit around 15 or 16.
The calculator above shows exact 10th grade birthdates for your state: choose a state and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Homeschool families in most states choose their child's grade themselves and can work at different levels by subject; if your state requires testing or evaluations at certain grades, factor that in.
Yes. Many sophomores turn 16 during the year, and a student with a birthday just after the cutoff may be 16 for most of 10th grade.
Commonly English 10, Geometry or Algebra II, biology or chemistry, world history, and a foreign language, plus electives. Homeschoolers pick courses that fit their graduation plan.
