12th grade or past 12th grade

A 18-year-old is usually in 12th grade or past 12th grade. Which one depends on their birthday and your state's kindergarten cutoff (September 1 in most states).

For 2026–27: usually finished high school if born on or before Sep 1, 2008.

12th grade if born Sep 2, 2008 – Sep 1, 2009.

Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Some families wait a year to start kindergarten (often called redshirting), some schools allow early entry, and homeschoolers can place a child by readiness in each subject.

An 18-year-old has usually finished high school, or is a 12th grader who turned 18 during senior year.

With a September 1 cutoff, students born between September 2, 2007, and September 1, 2008, are seniors in 2026–27, so many turn 18 before graduation in spring 2027. Students born on or before September 1, 2007, have usually graduated. It's common for students with fall birthdays, or who started school late, to be 18 for most of senior year. In many states, students can stay in public school past 18 if they're still working toward a diploma, and students with an IEP may receive services until 21 or 22.

Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.

Tips for using it

  • If your 18-year-old still needs credits, ask about adult education or online diploma programs in your state.
  • Students with an IEP can keep special education services past 18 in many states; ask the district about the transition plan.

Questions

Can an 18-year-old still be in high school?

Yes. Many seniors turn 18 during 12th grade, and states generally let students keep attending public school past 18 while they finish a diploma, up to an age limit set by the state.

What grade would an 18-year-old be in?

Usually 12th grade if they turned 18 during senior year, or past high school if they turned 18 before it started. Placement depends on credits earned, not only age.
