A 13-year-old is usually in 8th grade, or in 7th grade if they turned 13 after the fall cutoff.
In states with a September 1 cutoff, 8th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2012, and September 1, 2013. Eighth grade is usually the last year of middle school, and it sets up high school: many students take Algebra I, and some take a high school course that may count for credit. Homeschool families can count high school-level work done in 8th grade on a transcript in many cases, but check what your state and any future college expect.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- If your 13-year-old takes Algebra I or a high school science course, keep records now; you may be able to list it on the high school transcript.
- Eighth grade is a good year to try one outside class, such as an online course or co-op, to practice deadlines.

Questions
Is a 13-year-old in 7th or 8th grade?
Either. A child who turned 13 by the fall cutoff is usually in 8th grade; one who turns 13 later in the school year is usually in 7th.
Can 8th grade classes count for high school credit?
Often, if the course is truly high school level, like Algebra I or a foreign language. Public schools set their own rules. Homeschool parents decide for their own transcript, though colleges may ask how the course was taught.
