This sheet drills one table: 26 problems that multiply 0 through 12 by 9, in mixed order so children can't just count up. Every fact from 9 × 0 to 9 × 12 appears exactly twice, and the answer key is on the second page.

The 9s have the best patterns: the digits of each answer add to 9 (9 × 6 = 54, 5 + 4 = 9), and the tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by. The finger trick works up to 9 × 10.

Use it once a chart is no longer needed. Time a first try, then repeat the sheet (press New problems for a fresh order) over a few days and watch the time drop. When the 9s feel automatic, move on to the next table or a mixed times tables worksheet. Want a reference to learn from first? Print the 9 times table chart.

Tips for using it

  • Finger trick: hold up 10 fingers, fold down the 7th. Fingers left of it (6) are tens, right of it (3) are ones: 9 × 7 = 63.
  • Have your child say the fact out loud while writing it. Saying and writing together sticks better than writing alone.
  • Circle any fact that took more than three seconds. Those are the ones to practice tomorrow.

Questions

What is the finger trick for the 9 times table?

Hold up 10 fingers and fold down the finger for the number you multiply by. The fingers to the left are the tens and the fingers to the right are the ones. For 9 × 4, fold the 4th finger: 3 left and 6 right, so 36.

How many problems are on the 9 times table worksheet?

Twenty-six: each fact from 9 × 0 to 9 × 12 twice, shuffled. Change Number of problems to make it shorter or longer; the facts are always dealt evenly.
