A 3-year-old isn't in a school grade yet. Most 3-year-olds who attend a program are in preschool (often called the 3s class), and a child who turns 3 after the fall cutoff may still be in a 2s or toddler class.
Public school grades start with kindergarten at age 5, and a few states offer public pre-K for 4-year-olds. Preschool for 3-year-olds is usually private, run by a church or community program, or part of Head Start for families who qualify. Kindergarten for a child born between September 2, 2022, and September 1, 2023, would start in fall 2028 in a state with a September 1 cutoff. At home, this is the age for read-alouds, songs, play, talking and lots of outdoor time rather than worksheets.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- Look up your state's kindergarten cutoff now so you know which fall your child will start school.
- Short, playful activities work best at 3: sorting, counting objects, naming letters in their own name.

Questions
Do 3-year-olds have to go to preschool?
No. No state requires preschool, and school attendance laws start later, usually between ages 5 and 8 depending on the state. Preschool at 3 is a family choice.
What should a 3-year-old be learning?
Language and play matter most: talking in sentences, listening to stories, counting small groups, and naming colors and shapes. Many children start recognizing a few letters, especially the ones in their name.
