Third graders are usually 8 years old at the start of the year and turn 9 during it. So most 3rd graders are 8 or 9.

Under a September 1 cutoff, 3rd graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2017, and September 1, 2018. Third grade is a turning point: multiplication and division begin, fractions appear, and reading shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. It's also the first year of state standardized tests in public schools in most states, and some states test homeschoolers or require evaluations at set grades, so check your state's rules before you choose a grade.

Tips for using it

By the end of 3rd grade, Common Core standards expect kids to know all one-digit multiplication facts from memory; start with the 2s, 5s and 10s.
If your 3rd grader still struggles to read, now is the time to get help; reading demands climb fast in 4th grade.
