A 4-year-old is usually in pre-K (the 4s class), or in preschool if they turned 4 after the fall cutoff. Most 4-year-olds start kindergarten the fall after they turn 5.
In a state with a September 1 cutoff, children born between September 2, 2021, and September 1, 2022, are in pre-K for 2026–27 and start kindergarten in fall 2027. States with later cutoffs, like Colorado (October 1) or New York City and many New York districts (December 1), let some 4-year-olds start kindergarten in the fall and turn 5 that autumn. California's transitional kindergarten also serves many 4-year-olds the year before kindergarten.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- If your child turns 5 within a few weeks of your state's cutoff, ask your district about early entry rules before you plan the year.
- Pre-K at home can be 20–30 minutes of focused play-based learning a day, plus reading aloud.

Questions
Can a 4-year-old go to kindergarten?
Sometimes. A child who turns 5 by the state cutoff can start kindergarten while still 4 at the start of the school year, which is common in states with October or December dates. Some states and districts also allow early entry after an assessment.
Is pre-K free?
It depends on your state and district. Many states fund pre-K for some or all 4-year-olds, and Head Start serves families who qualify by income. Check your state education department.
