A 6-year-old is usually in 1st grade, or in kindergarten if they turned 6 after the fall cutoff.
With a September 1 cutoff, 1st graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2019, and September 1, 2020, and kindergarteners between September 2, 2020, and September 1, 2021. Many kindergarteners turn 6 during the school year, so it's normal for a class to have both 5- and 6-year-olds. Six is also the age when compulsory school attendance begins in many states, so homeschool families often file their first notice around now.
Use the calculator above for an exact answer: enter your child's birthdate and choose your state, and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Grade by age is a guide, not a rule. Homeschool families can place a child by readiness, even at different levels in different subjects.
Tips for using it
- If you're homeschooling, check when your state's compulsory age starts; that's often when a notice of intent is first due.
- At 6, short daily phonics and math lessons (15–20 minutes each) are plenty.

Questions
Is a 6-year-old in kindergarten or 1st grade?
Either is normal. It depends on the birthday and the state cutoff: a child who was already 6 by the cutoff is usually in 1st grade, while one who turns 6 later in the school year is usually in kindergarten.
What should a 6-year-old be able to read?
Many 6-year-olds are learning to blend sounds into simple words and read short decodable books. The range is wide at this age, and steady phonics practice matters more than a specific level.
