Second graders are usually 7 years old at the start of the year and turn 8 during it. So most 2nd graders are 7 or 8.

With a September 1 cutoff, 2nd graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2018, and September 1, 2019. Second grade is when most children move from decoding to reading fluently, start chapter books, and write short paragraphs. In math they work on place value, adding and subtracting within 1,000, and early multiplication ideas. A 2nd grader who moved from a state with a different cutoff may be a few months older or younger than classmates.

Homeschool families in most states choose their child's grade themselves and can work at different levels by subject; if your state requires testing or evaluations at certain grades, factor that in.

Tips for using it

Reading fluency (smooth, accurate reading aloud) is the big 2nd grade goal; a few minutes of rereading favorite books helps.
Practice addition and subtraction facts within 20 until they're quick; it makes 3rd grade multiplication easier.
