Sixth graders are usually 11 years old at the start of the year and turn 12 during it. So most 6th graders are 11 or 12.
With a September 1 cutoff, 6th graders for 2026–27 were born between September 2, 2014, and September 1, 2015. Sixth grade is the first year of middle school in many districts. Students switch classes, manage more homework, and meet ratios, rates, negative numbers and simple equations in math. For homeschoolers, it's often when families add outside classes, a co-op, or a more independent online curriculum.
The calculator above shows exact 6th grade birthdates for your state: choose a state and it applies that state's kindergarten cutoff to the 2026–27 school year. Homeschool families in most states choose their child's grade themselves and can work at different levels by subject; if your state requires testing or evaluations at certain grades, factor that in.
Tips for using it
- Teach a simple weekly planning routine in 6th grade; time management is the skill middle school demands most.
- If your 6th grader is strong in math, a solid pre-algebra year now sets up Algebra I in 7th or 8th.
