How to use the handwriting worksheet generator
Start with Practice and pick a mode:
- Names, words & sentences. One item per line. Each gets four rows: trace with a model, write from start dots, copy, then write alone.
- Letters (A–Z rows). Two rows for each letter you choose, capital and lowercase, with stroke numbers and arrows on the model. Type a range (A-E) or a list (B D P Q).
- One letter in depth. A letter-of-the-week page: a big model with arrows, letter rows, two words and a sentence that start with the letter, like our letter tracing worksheets.
- Alphabet chart. All 26 letters on one page, plus a tracing copy, like the ABC tracing chart.
- Numbers. Digits 0 to 9 or 1 to 20 with ten-frame counting dots and optional number words, as in our number tracing worksheets.
Then choose print or cursive, the line size and the tracing style. Everything updates live.
What makes a good handwriting worksheet
Most handwriting problems come from how letters are formed, not how they look. A good worksheet teaches formation first:
- Start points and direction. Green dots and arrows show where to begin and which way to go. Letters started at the bottom are slower and harder to join later.
- Consistent lines. Three guide lines (top, dashed midline, baseline) and a dotted descender line show exactly how tall each letter should be.
- A gradual release. Trace, then write with a start dot, then copy, then write alone. Tracing only can make kids depend on the dots.
- Real words. Once letters are formed correctly, writing words and sentences builds spacing and size control.
Handwriting skills by grade
| Grade | Focus | Suggested settings |
|---|---|---|
| Preschool | Capitals, own name, simple strokes | Letters or names, Trace only, large lines |
| Kindergarten | All letters, CVC words, first sentences | Kindergarten worksheets, large lines |
| 1st grade | Neat sentences, spacing, descenders | 1st grade worksheets, medium lines |
| 2nd grade | Longer sentences; many begin cursive | 2nd grade worksheets, small lines |
| 3rd grade+ | Cursive words and sentences | 3rd grade cursive, medium or small lines |
Printing tips
Print at 100% scale so guide lines keep their size. Match the paper setting (US Letter or A4) to your printer. Portrait suits letters and short words; landscape gives long sentences more room. A dry-erase sleeve turns any page into reusable practice.
When worksheets aren't enough
If handwriting is a daily struggle, or you want a planned sequence instead of making pages, a handwriting curriculum helps. Questions
Is the handwriting worksheet generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, watermark or page limit. Every page includes a small edulist.com footer.
What handwriting style does it use?
Print is a simple ball-and-stick manuscript similar to what most kindergarten classrooms teach. Cursive is a traditional slanted, looped style. Neither is a copy of a trademarked program's letters.
Can I use it for adults?
Yes. Choose small lines and type any text. Adults working on neater print or learning cursive use the same trace, copy and write pattern.
How do I keep a worksheet I made?
Download the PDF, or bookmark the page. Your settings are saved in the page address, so the same link rebuilds the same worksheet.
