How to use it
- Type what to trace
Letter pairs (Aa Bb), numbers (1 2 3), words or a name, one item per line.
- Choose the tracing style
Dotted is easiest to follow, dashed is a little harder, and light gray is a good last step before writing alone.
- Print it
Keep large lines for ages 3 to 5. Print, or download the PDF to use later.
How to use the tracing worksheet maker
Type what your child should trace, one item per line. A line can be letter pairs ("Aa Bb Cc"), numbers ("1 2 3"), a short word or a name. With the Trace only pattern, each line gets four rows of tracing, and every copy starts at a green dot so children learn where to begin.
When tracing looks steady, change the Row pattern:
- Trace twice, then copy adds a copy row and a row to write alone.
- Trace, dots, copy, write is the full progression, from tracing to writing without help.
You can also switch Practice to Letters for A to Z rows, or Numbers for digits with counting dots.
What makes a good tracing worksheet
- Start dots. Children who know where to start form letters top to bottom, which is faster and neater later.
- Big, clear guide lines. The top line, dashed midline and baseline show size. Large lines suit small hands.
- Short sessions. A page with four rows is plenty for a preschooler. Stop while it is still fun.
- A path off the dots. Tracing is a first step. Fading from dotted to gray to blank lines builds independence.
Tracing skills by age
| Age | Ready for | Try |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lines, circles, the first letter of their name | Trace only, a few big capitals |
| 4 | Capital letters, own name, numbers 1 to 5 | Preschool tracing worksheets |
| 5 | Lowercase letters, numbers to 10, sight words | Kindergarten tracing worksheets |
| 6 | Words and short sentences with less tracing | Kindergarten handwriting |
Every child is different, so treat these as rough guides.
Printing tips
Print at actual size. Cardstock stands up to crayons and markers. To reuse a page, put it in a sheet protector and trace with a dry-erase marker, then wipe and repeat. Light gray tracing can fade on low-ink printers; switch to dotted if it looks too faint.
When worksheets aren't enough
Tracing sheets are a good supplement, but a structured early learning program teaches letters, sounds and numbers in a planned order. Handwriting Without Tears and its pre-K line from Learning Without Tears are built around short, hands-on lessons, and Khan Academy Kids is a free app for ages 2 to 8. Questions
What is the difference between dotted, dashed and gray tracing?
Dotted letters show the path as a trail of dots, which young children find easiest to follow. Dashed letters have longer gaps, and light gray letters are complete but faint. Moving from dotted to gray is a gentle way to fade support.
Can I make tracing worksheets with numbers?
Yes. Type numbers on a line, or switch Practice to Numbers for digits with ten-frame counting dots and number words.
Can the tracing worksheet maker do shapes or lines?
Not yet. It traces letters, numbers and words. For prewriting strokes, draw lines and circles by hand before moving to letters.
What age is tracing for?
Many children start tracing letters around age 4, once they hold a crayon with their fingers. Before that, scribbling, drawing and playdough build the hand strength tracing needs.
