How to use it

  1. Set the range

Type the first and last numbers. Negative numbers work, so −10 to 10 makes an integer line.

  2. Choose the steps

Pick what to count by (1s, 2s, 5s, 10s and more), then add smaller marks for halves, thirds, fourths, tenths or other fractions.

  3. Decide what's shown

Show all numbers for a reference line, some or only the ends for practice, or none for blank lines. Practice sheets add an answer key.

  4. Print

Choose how many lines per sheet (1 to 12), then print or download the PDF.

How to use the number line generator

Type a start and an end, choose what to count by, and the number lines appear instantly. A 0–20 number line counts by ones. Set Count by to 10s and To 100 for a tens line. Add Smaller marks to split each step: fourths make a fraction number line, and tenths with decimal labels make a decimal number line. Set From to a negative number for an integer number line.

Numbers shown turns any line into a worksheet. Some missing hides about half the labels (every row keeps its first number to count from), Only the ends leaves the middle for kids to fill, and Blank prints tick marks only, like our blank number lines. The answer key shows the missing labels in red, and New problems hides a different set.

What makes a good number line

  • Even spacing. Every tick is exactly the same distance apart. That spacing is the whole point: it shows that the gap from 3 to 4 equals the gap from 17 to 18.
  • Room for every label. The generator sizes labels to the spacing and wraps long ranges onto rows instead of shrinking numbers to nothing. A 0–100 line becomes five rows of 20.
  • Clear landmarks. Whole numbers get taller ticks than fractions, zero gets a heavier tick on integer lines, and arrows on both ends show the numbers keep going.
  • Exact labels. Every label is computed as a fraction, never a rounded decimal, so 1/3 is always 1/3.

The Common Core standards name number line diagrams in 2nd grade (2.MD.B.6), use them for fractions in 3rd grade (3.NF.A.2), and extend them to negative numbers in 6th grade (6.NS.C.6).

Printing tips

Choose landscape for a single long line, or portrait with six to eight lines for a practice sheet. Slide a page into a sheet protector so kids can draw hops with a dry-erase marker and reuse it. For a wall number line, print one line per page and tape the pages end to end.

When worksheets aren't enough

Number lines are a model, and kids learn models best with someone explaining them. Programs like Zearn (free, with on-screen teachers) and Beast Academy use number lines throughout their lessons, and Mathseeds suits the early grades. Questions

How long can a number line be?

Ranges from −1,000 to 1,000 are allowed. Long lines wrap onto several rows and pages, up to eight pages. For very long ranges, count by a bigger step.

How are fractions labeled?

As unreduced fractions and mixed numbers, so a fourths line reads 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4. That lets kids see that 2/4 lands on the same spot as 1/2. Choose decimal labels for tenths, fourths, fifths, halves or eighths.

What is the difference between a blank and an open number line?

A blank number line has evenly spaced tick marks with no numbers. An open number line has no ticks at all; kids draw their own jumps. Blank lines are better for learning order and spacing; open lines are a mental-math sketch tool.
