How to choose reading Programs for Kids: From Learning to Read to Reading to Learn

  1. Find the reading stage first

Is your child still learning letter sounds, sounding out words slowly, reading fluently but missing meaning, or reading well? Each stage needs a different kind of program.

  2. Look for systematic, explicit phonics

Federal research guides recommend teaching letter-sound links in a planned sequence, with blending and decodable text. Programs that rely on guessing from pictures skip this.

  3. Daily reading of real text

Kids need to read connected text every day, not just do drills. Pair any program with decodable readers early on, then a steady supply of books at the right level.

  4. Build knowledge and vocabulary

Comprehension depends on what kids know about the world. Read-alouds, history and science books and vocabulary work matter as much as reading strategies.

  5. Get help early for persistent struggles

If a child isn't making steady progress by late 1st grade despite good teaching, consider screening for dyslexia and a structured literacy program.

What research says good reading instruction includes

The What Works Clearinghouse's K–3 guide recommends teaching academic language and vocabulary, building awareness of the sounds in words and how they link to letters, teaching kids to decode and spell words, and making sure every child reads connected text daily. Its grades 4–9 guide adds multisyllabic decoding, purposeful fluency practice and routines for comprehension. Use those as a checklist for any program.

Explore reading by grade and need

Browse kindergarten reading curriculum, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, elementary and middle school reading curriculum. For specific needs, see reading programs for struggling readers, dyslexia programs and reading intervention programs. Ranked lists: the best reading programs for kids and the best phonics programs.

Paying for reading programs

Curriculum, tutoring and therapies are allowed in many ESA programs, and some states fund dyslexia services through special-needs scholarships. Each program decides what qualifies. Read what ESA funds can be used for and save your picks to a wishlist.

Questions

What is the science of reading?

It's a body of research on how children learn to read. It points to explicit, systematic teaching of phonemic awareness and phonics, plus fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Many newer programs say they're aligned with it, so check that the lessons actually teach phonics in sequence.

What age should a child start a reading program?

Many children start formal phonics at 5 or 6, after playing with sounds and letters in preschool. Some are ready at 4; others closer to 7. Readiness signs include knowing letter names and hearing rhyming words.

How much reading practice does a child need each day?

For beginners, 15 to 20 minutes of a phonics lesson plus reading aloud to an adult is a good start. Add read-aloud time from you; it builds vocabulary that kids can't yet reach on their own.

Can a scholarship or ESA pay for a reading program?

Often, yes. Curriculum, tutoring and educational therapies are commonly allowed, and several states run special-needs scholarships that cover dyslexia programs. Each program sets its own rules.
